Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian ministry founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live.
In fiscal year 2014, Habitat served over 1.6 million people through home construction, rehabilitation and repairs and by increasing access to improved shelter through products and services. Other efforts like training in construction and financial management and by advocating for policies and systems that increase access to housing solutions, an additional 3 million people now have the potential to improve their living conditions. Over 1 million families have been served as of June 2014 since Habitat was founded in 1976.
Randall Wallace, screenwriter of Braveheart and founder of Hollywood for Habitat for Humanity writes, "Habitat for Humanity is a perpetual motion miracle: everyone who receives, gives and everyone who gives, receives. If you want to live complacent and uninspired, stay away from Habitat; come close to Habitat and it will change you, and make you part of something that changes the world."
With over 800 million people living in deplorable circumstances in urban slums around the world, the need for affordable housing has never been more urgent. At the April 2012 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Weekend, which Dave & Susi attended, CEO Jonathan Reckford presented BuildingIMPACT, Draft 2 of Habitat for Humanity's Strategic Plan for 2014–2018. Driven by the bold vision of A world where everyone has a decent place to live, Habitat will exponentially increase its reach and depth by augmenting the core house–building programs with an exciting array of innovative microfinance, partnership, advocacy, and community development initiatives.
Dave & Susi believe they speak for the entire Columbus Global Village Team by responding to HFHI's evolving strategic call with feelings of admiration, excitement, inspiration and humility. They hope to echo the words on Page i of BuildIMPACT: "We must do more. We must do it faster. We must do it with more impact. And we must work with others to expand our reach and depth."
